We’d like to welcome our newest board member, Jenn Newman.
Jenn lives in Minneapolis, and has homeschooled for two years. She’s the parent of three children, ages 10, 9 and 4 (almost 5).
The ability to make an impact from behind the scenes drew her to MHA as a board volunteer. “Helping out MHA I am able be involved in the homeschool community in a way I could not have been otherwise,” she explained.
Jenn describes her homeschool style as eclectic. “We choose curriculum that works best for our family and often times that means little to none. While I thrive on schedules and lists, not all of my children do so we tend to have an idea of what we want to accomplish each week instead of a strict daily schedule,” she explained.
Jenn has degrees in history and theater. She reviews Young Adult novels for blogs. While she enjoys most genres, she typically reviews YA Fantasy and YA SciFi. She can often be found with a needle or hook in hand as she enjoys crochet, knit, embroider, sew, weave, felt and tat — as well as cleaning, carding and spinning yarn.
When it comes to music, Jenn has a deep love for the early 1990s, and Weezer and Cake are staples on her iPod. Her favorite food is cheese — “the stinkier the better,” she remarked.
Her secret passion is conservation and urban homesteading. “I am an avid gardener and spend a lot of my free time volunteering at schools and other organizations teaching homesteading skills related to gardening and food preservation and conservation,” stated Jenn. She also teaches cloth diapering in hospitals and resource centers.
