The Mall of American has something for every one — and during our 2018 Spring Convention Feb. 26-27 you can take advantage of great discounts just for homeschoolers! Homeschool Week at the Mall actually lasts Monday to Friday, so there’s plenty of time to work these great events into your family’s plans for the week.
SEA LIFE AQUARIUM
When MOA first opened 25 years ago, this 1.3 million-gallon aquarium was known as Underwater World, but the new and improved SEA LIFE Aquarium still offers the same amazing experience. The aquarium is home to thousands of creatures, including fish, sharks, sea turtles, clown fish, alligators, jellyfish, sea horses and stingrays. Visitors are encouraged to spend at least an hour checking everything out.
One of the most popular exhibits is the Pacific Northwest Rockpool, where visitors are able to touch sea creatures, including sea stars, anemones and sea cucumbers. Visitors can also snorkel with the fish or feed the stingrays. If you’re the type who prefers to watch from afar, there are public daily feeding schedules for the animals, from sea horses to sharks, where you can watch from the safety of dry land. More than 100 pounds of food are fed daily to the animals in the aquarium.
Homeschool students, teachers and their families are invited to explore the aquarium and participate in educational Activity Stations for only $7+tax per person (Adult or Child). As always, tiny kids (2 & under) are free. Regular admission prices are: $24.25+tax/adult and $17.25+tax/child.
To get the discounted pricing you’ll need to bring proof of homeschooling. Accepted forms of Homeschool identification include:
(1) A membership card from ECHO-MN, MHA, MACHE or other homeschool group
(2) A copy of your “Letter of Intent to Continue Homeschooling”
(3) A copy of your “Initial Report to Superintendent”
During Homeschool Week, explore Activity Stations in the classrooms from 10:00am – 2:00pm. Come and go as you please and take part in interactive learning stations geared towards a variety of ages from Elementary School to High School. Network with other families from the homeschool community, while learning about marine life and science.
Behind the Scenes Tours are $5.00+tax per person and available at 10:30am, 11:30am, 12:30pm, 1:30pm and 2:30pm. Behind-the-Scenes Tours must be booked in advance and during homeschool week. A Behind-the-Scenes Tour is a 45-minute guided tour that will take you up on deck above the tunnel system where you can see animals that are currently off-exhibit. You will then explore the Laboratory to find out how staff treat and maintain the 1.3 million gallons of water that make up the aquarium. Finally, your tour guide will take you into the Food Prep Kitchen to see what staff feed the aquarium’s thousands of creatures in order to keep them healthy and strong.
Nick Universe is one of the world’s largest indoor amusement parks. Originally known as Camp Snoopy when MOA first opened, the remodel includes 27 rides and more than 30,000 live plants. Some of the original rides remain, including the Log Chute and the Carousel. New rides include Avatar Airbender, Brain Surge and Shredder’s Mutant Masher. Visitors also get the chance to meet their favorite Nickelodeon characters in person, including Dora, SpongeBob, and the Ninja Turtles. Weekly events include Toddler Tuesdays, the twice-daily Double Dare Challenge, and the nine-minute light show Universe of Light.
Homeschool week specials typically include: a $19 unlimited ride wristband for five hours; all-day unlimited ride wristband for $24.95; Moose Mountain Adventure Golf $8; Dutchman’s Deck Adventure Course $11.50; Rock of Ages Blacklight Minigolf $8; and various food discounts. We’ll try to update when the mall releases information.
